Feathers and Floras
Indonesia, the world’s largest archipelago, has more than 17,000 islands, making it one of the richest nations in biodiversity. The country is home to over 1,500 bird species, of which more than 400 are considered native.
The birds on this artwork are native to the five main islands: Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and Papua. From left to right, the featured birds include the blue-crowned hanging parrot, the rhinorecos hornbill, the Javan hawk-eagle, the greater bird-of-paradise or cenderawasih, and the yellow-crested cockatoo.
Locals call one of the birds the “Garuda” for its similarity in appearance to the national emblem. Legend also has it that one of the birds is a visitor from paradise for it is always flying and never seen touching the ground. Take a guess which of the birds described above fit the descriptions.
