Book Synopsis Using Ship Wake Patterns to Evaluate Sar Ocean Wave Imaging Mechanisms by : R. R. Hammond
Download or read book Using Ship Wake Patterns to Evaluate Sar Ocean Wave Imaging Mechanisms written by R. R. Hammond and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Joint Ocean Wave Investigation Project (JOWIP) was conducted to evaluate the detectability of ocean wave structures on imaging synthetic aperture radar (SAR). This project used Kelvin surface ship wake patterns generated under controlled and well documented surface environmental conditions to isolate SAR image parameters. Use of waves of known wavelength and direction provide the opportunity to evaluate the SAR contribution to ocean wave forecasting. SEASAT-like images made with L-band SAR are presented: (1) to suggest how ship-generated surface roughness combines with the velocity-bunching mechanism in calm ocean areas to produce the unusually narrow wakes observed for azimuth-traveling ships on SEASAT images; and (2) to estimate conditions under which SAR image modulation mechanisms can be expected to produce wake images. A method is described for using the Kelvin transverse ship wake wave component to quantitatively evaluate the contributions of various SAR ocean wave imaging mechanisms. It makes use of the narrow sector of surface roughness generated by a ship along its track to produce SAR images of the longest waves in its wake system on flat calm water.

Book Synopsis Wind Energy Conversion 1991 by : British Wind Energy Association. Conference
Download or read book Wind Energy Conversion 1991 written by British Wind Energy Association. Conference and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1991-09-02 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Having sited the conference where, even in July, they had a good chance of being able to test theories on a moment's notice, contributors from a wide range of disciplines consider not only the economic and engineering parameters of wind energy, but also the contentious issues of noise, visual impact, and aesthetics that have often accompanied the implementation or attempted implementation of wind farms in economically and politically marginalized regions of Britain. One of the three keynote addresses holds an olive branch to environmentalists. The other 45 papers cover overviews and perspectives, windfarm design and construction, power quality, wind turbine philosophies, autonomous systems, standards, design methods, technical tools, components, planning, visual and aesthetic considerations, noise issues, non-UK markets financing and economics, market and industrial opportunities in the UK, and integrating wind energy into the grid. Book Synopsis Aircraft Wake Turbulence and Its Detection by : John Olsen
Download or read book Aircraft Wake Turbulence and Its Detection written by John Olsen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combination of increasing airport congestion and the ad vent of large transports has caused increased interest in aircraft wake turbulence. A quantitative understanding of the interaction between an aircraft and the vortex wake of a preceding aircraft is necessary for planning future high density air traffic patterns and control systems. The nature of the interaction depends on both the characteristics of the following aircraft and the characteristics of the wake. Some of the questions to be answered are: What deter mines the full characteristics of the vortex wake? What properties of the following aircraft are important? What is the role of pilot response? How are the wake characteristics related to the genera ting aircraft parameters? How does the wake disintegrate and where? Many of these questions were addressed at this first Aircraft Wake Turbulence Symposium sponsored by the Air Force Office of Sci entific Research and The Boeing Company. Workers engaged in aero dynamic research, airport operations, and instrument development came from several count ries to present their results and exchange information. The new results from the meeting provide a current picture of the state of the knowledge on vortex wakes and their interactions with other aircraft. Phenomena previously regarded as mere curiosities have emerged as important tools for understanding or controlling vortex wakes. The new types of instability occurring within the wake may one day be used for promoting early dis integration of the hazardous twin vortex structure.

Download or read book Air Pollution written by Jeremy Colls and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one stop, comprehensive textbook, covering the three essential components of air pollution science. The Third Edition has been updated with the latest developments, especially the inclusion of new information on the role of air pollutants in climate change. The authors give greater coverage to the developing economies around the world where air pollution problems are on the rise. The Third Edition continues to cover a wide range of air quality issues, retaining a quantitative perspective. Topics covered include - gaseous and particulate air pollutants, measurement techniques, meteorology and dispersion modelling, mobile sources, indoor air, effects on plants, materials, humans and animals. Moving away from classical toxic air pollutants, there is a chapter on climate change and another on the depletion of stratospheric ozone. A special feature of this new edition is the inclusion of a fresh chapter on air pollution mitigation by vegetation, mainly its role in maintaining a sustainable urban environment. Recommended for upper-level undergraduate and postgraduate courses specialising in air pollution, both for environmental scientists and engineers. The new material included in the Third Edition extends its use by practitioners in consultancies or local authorities.
Book Synopsis Aircraft Wake Vortex Spacing System (AVOSS) Performance Update and Validation Study by : David K. Rutishauser
Download or read book Aircraft Wake Vortex Spacing System (AVOSS) Performance Update and Validation Study written by David K. Rutishauser and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An analysis has been performed on data generated from the two most recent field deployments of the Aircraft Wake Vortex Spacing System (AVOSS). The AVOSS provides reduced aircraft spacing criteria for wake vortex avoidance as compared to the FAA spacing applied under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). Several field deployments culminating in a system demonstration at Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) International Airport in the summer of 2000 were successful in showing a sound operational concept and the system's potential to provide a significant benefit to airport operations. For DFW, a predicted average throughput increase of 6% was observed. This increase implies 6 or 7 more aircraft on the ground in a one-hour period for DFE operations. Several studies of performacne correlations to system configuration options, and system inputs are also reported. The studies focus on the validation performance of the system.

Book Synopsis The Wake of the Unseen Object by : Tom Kizzia
Download or read book The Wake of the Unseen Object written by Tom Kizzia and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2020-12-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A journey to Alaska’s remote roadless villages, during a time of great historical transition, brings us this enduring portrait of a place and its people. Alutiiq, Yup’ik, Inupiaq, and Athabascan subjects reveal themselves as entirely contemporary individuals with deep longings and connection to the land and to their past. Tom Kizzia’s account of his travels off the Alaska road system, first published in 1991, has endured with a sterling reputation for its thoughtful, poetic, unflinching engagement with the complexity of Alaska’s rural communities. Wake of the Unseen Object is now considered some of the finest nonfiction writing about Alaska. This new edition includes an updated introduction by the author, looking at what remains the same after thirty years and what is different—both in Alaska, and in the expectations placed on a reporter visiting from another world.
