Download or read book Chasing Ghosts written by Louise DeSalvo and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Both a beautifully detailed examination of wartime life and a searingly honest depiction of a fraught father-daughter relationship.” —Phil Klay, National Book Award-winning author of Missionaries When literary biographer and memoirist Louise DeSalvo embarked upon a journey to learn why her father came home from World War II a changed man, she didn’t realize her quest would take ten years, and that it would yield more revelations about the man—and herself—and the effect of his military service upon their family than she’d ever imagined. Although DeSalvo at first believes she wants to uncover his story, the story of a man who was no hero but who was nonetheless adversely affected by his military service, she learns that what she really wants is to recover the man that he was before he went away. As DeSalvo and her father uncover his past piece-by-piece, bit-by-bit, she learns about the dreams of a working-class man who entered the military in the late 1930s during peacetime to better himself, a man who wanted to become a pilot. She learns about what it was like for him to participate in war games in the Pacific prior to the war, and its devastating toll. She learns about what it was like for her parents to fall in love, set up house, marry, and have children during this cataclysmic time. And as the pieces of her father’s life fall into place, she finds herself finally able to understand him. “[An] excellent memoir. Louise DeSalvo remembers her soldier father in a manner both unsparing and elegiac.” —Alexandra Styron, author of Steal This Country

Book Synopsis Jewish Identity in the Reconstruction South by : Anton Hieke
Download or read book Jewish Identity in the Reconstruction South written by Anton Hieke and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-05-28 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How far can Jewish life in the South during Reconstruction (1863–1877) be described as German in a period of American Jewry traditionally referred to as ‘German Jewish’ in historiography? To what extent were Jewish immigrants in the South acculturated to Southern identity and customs? Anton Hieke discusses the experience of Jewish immigrants in the Reconstruction South as exemplified by Georgia and the Carolinas. The book critically explores the shifting identities of German Jewish immigrants, their impact on congregational life, and of their identity as ‘Southerners’. The author draws from demographic data of six thousand individuals representing the complete identifiable Jewish minority in Georgia, South and North Carolina from 1860 to 1880. Reconstruction, it is concluded, has to be seen as a formative period for the region’s Jewish congregations and Reform Judaism. The study challenges existing views that are claiming German Jews were setting the standard for Jewish life in this period and were perceived as distinct from Jews of another background. Rather Hieke arrives at a conclusion that takes into consideration the migratory movement between North and South.
Book Synopsis Monitoring and Control of Macrofouling Mollusks in Fresh Water Systems, Second Edition by : Gerald L. Mackie
Download or read book Monitoring and Control of Macrofouling Mollusks in Fresh Water Systems, Second Edition written by Gerald L. Mackie and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2009-12-23 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Upon its initial publication more than fifteen years ago, this book broke new ground with its comprehensive coverage of the biology and ecology, distribution and dispersal mechanisms, physiology, monitoring, negative and positive impacts, and control of aquatic invasive species of mussels, clams, and snails. Building on this foundation, the second edition of Monitoring and Control of Macrofouling Mollusks in Fresh Water Systems includes completely revised information on species such as the zebra mussel while also covering up-and-coming nuisance species such as the quagga mussel, Conrad’s false mussel, the Asian clam, and the fast-spreading golden mussel. The Second Edition includes: Ten new species of mussels and snails International case studies on mussel fouling problems and how to cope with them New control and monitoring techniques Discussions of the latest threats and possible future scenarios The book contains brief descriptions of the external and internal structures, examining only those features relevant to the monitoring and control of the invasive species. It discusses why the mollusks are pests, distinguishing nuisance species from native species, their habits and habitat, reproductive potential, and life cycles and population dynamics. The authors also explain how efficient dispersal mechanisms employed by the nuisance mollusks not only help them spread so rapidly to inland lakes and rivers across continents, but how they can invade virtually every part of a facility. While many other resources contain segments of this information, none cover all areas and link them in a cohesive fashion. It is this approach that makes the understanding of potential impacts on ecosystems, industries and utilities, as well as the many human-made physical and chemical mitigants for controlling the mollusks supplied by this book so crucial for preserving the health of raw water supplies.
